SUSTAINABLE GARDENING AT KORANRUG PRIMARY – UPDATE
On 21 Aug, FCIA went back to Koranrug Primary in Darling to complete our pilot sustainable gardening programme.

Two weeks prior to this, the children watched a puppet show on gardening and grew their own seeds in a pot.

Now it was time to return to transplant these seedlings into the gardens. My dad, Brian Skinner, made up two crates that were used for the gardens. We needed to do this as there is a problem with moles at the school so had to devise a plan to do gardening above the ground.

The grade 1’s – 3’s planted carrots and beetroot in the one crate and the grade 4’s – 6’s planted cauliflower and cabbage in the other crate. We explained to them how to nurture and look after their plants and after returning a few weeks later found that the grade 1’s – 3’s plants were growing beautifully, however the grade 4’s – 6’s plants had died.

They led me to believe that the mice ate their plants! Another pest that we did not think about!

A big thank you to Kevin Kimbrey of Sika who donated the pallets that we used to make up the crates and to my dad for using his skills to do so!

Love & Blessings
